Tomo no Kai's JODAIKO: |
KONNECT's Kpop aspiring performers |
Jodaiko is a part of Tomo No Kai that practices the
traditional use of the Taiko drum (specifically the Obon Taiko, a different
style over other kumi-daiko groups). Established originally as Tomo No Taiko,
they renamed themselves Jodaiko in remembrance of the founding members.
Jodaiko’s purpose is to share the culture of taiko drumming with everyone else,
encouraging both cultural diversity and the spirit of performing arts. Fun
Fact: maintains own equipment as to not receive criticism for their
participation in socio-political events. Was criticized before by group who
lent them equipment due to participation in protest. (i.e. taiko shouldn’t be
used in political issues.
Konnect's Urban motus
Urban Motus is an exhibition dance group that is
part of Konnect. Founded by a group of people with a common interest in the art
of dance, Urban Motus works to be unique and stands out amongst the various
other dance teams on campus. They are different from Konnect’s other dance
group, KKAP, choreographing more modern music such as pop, hip-hop, EDM,
R&B, etc. They focus on family values and hard work in order to maintain
synergy and become one of the best dance groups out there. Because of this,
they aspire to spread the values of humility, dedication and discipline, as
well as the idea of freedom to everyone who watches them perform. Fun fact:
Urban Motus means Artistic Movement.

Originally formed as a performance group on UCI’s
Korean Culture Night 2011, KKAP (Konnect Kpop Aspiring Performers) merged with
Konnect in the beginning of 2011-2012. The purpose is to create a place where
everyone who is interested in K-Pop can enjoy themselves and meet others with
similar interests. They encourage everyone to join regardless of dance
experience and the team consists of people with diverse backgrounds. One of KKAP’s
goals focuses on spreading Korean music culture to everyone and promoting cultural
diversity. Internally, KKAP focuses on the aspects of fun and entertainment to
create a warm and welcoming environment for its members and strives to share
the team’s enthusiasm to its audiences as well.
Vietnamese student association's Southern wind lion dance
Founded in Fall 2004 as a fundraising group for VSA,
the Southern Wind Lion Dance strives to maintain the tradition of lion dance.
Preserving traditional values, the lion dance is meant to ward off evil spirits
and bring good luck to the audience. As a part of VSA, Gionam’s goal is to
preserve and promote Vietnamese culture within UCI and the surrounding
community. Within the group, they focus on family and creating strong bonds not
only amongst teammates, but with other lion dance groups around Orange County.
Their technique focuses on combining traditional dance with the modern style of
lion dance in order to create a unique way of presenting the art. Fun fact:
they were named the Southern Wind by the founder of Gionam because “the South
wind represents their Asian heritage, and like the wind, it has traveled a
great distance from Asia to America.”
